Empowering young minds to wade through hardships

Bhanuchandar, an 8-year-old beneficiary of The Akshaya Patra Foundation from Hyderabad is a victim of polio. His grandmother, Ammamma, means the world to him as she's the only one in his family who has taken care of him since he was born. It is only because of Ammamma that Bhanu still has that twinkle in his eyes and there is hope for him. Bhanu's Ammamma is asthmatic; but despite her condition, the 55-year-old woman tows his wheelchair twice a day to and from his school.bhanuchander-in-hyderabad

It is quite stressful for her to tow Bhanu's wheelchair because of which there are days when she is too weak to take him to school and he has to miss school. Bhanu's uncle works as a labourer for daily wages. The days when he fails to get a job, the family goes to sleep on an empty stomach. Bhanu is also deprived of a nutritious food at home which is a vital need for his physical stamina.

His Ammamma says, "My grandson is happy to go to school since he gets hot food, snacks and fruits also. I can't afford any of these constantly." Most of the time, the food at home is only some porridge. Due to lack of nutrition, Bhanu seems to have underdeveloped maturity too. But his teacher, Laxmi, is confident that by consuming healthy food regularly, children like Bhanu will grow better and gain confidence despite the physical challenges they face.
